PRACTICALLY PRACTICING MUSIC

Practice

Practice, ugghh, just the word itself begins to make my stomach churn.  If you are anything like me, you have spent an endless number of hours PRACTICING everything from sports to music and everything in between.  But stop and think with me for a moment.  Think of a couple of things that you are good at: ping-pong, golf, air hockey, a cool handshake, blowing spit bubble,,,what? Everyone has something they are great at.  True some efforts are more plausible than others, but whatever the thing may be, you are great at something.  Now, think about how you became great at that thing.  It probably was not by PRACTICING but by JAMMING.  Jamming is so much more fun than practicing.

Becoming great at music must be approached the same way as becoming the high school burping champion- HANG AROUND PEOPLE THAT BURP BETTER THAN YOU, well, except play music instead of burping. That’s right, you never become great at something on your own, you become great by hanging around people that are great.

In the music world we call this jamming.  Jamming is the equivalent of learning spanish by hanging out with friends in Mexico.  By physically surrounding yourself with professionals, you will slowly begin to become a professional yourself.  But if you want to go on a date with Rosetta Stone go right ahead (she’s not that cute).  When you approach music in this manner, it will never get boring like PRACTICE.

Stay tuned for part 2 on HOW TO PRACTICE.....haha. blake
